Stone alternative to lawns
Green lawns are good only in perfect condition. Luxurious emerald carpets require such a scrupulous approach to both creation and care that many gardeners will sooner or later look at their alternatives. The most popular option is to use flowering meadows and ground covers, minimizing haircuts and other worries. But they are not the only option. A stone in all its diversity can also become a full-fledged rival to lawns. Loose and crunchy gravel and crushed stone underfoot, a combination of paving and flower inserts, as well as stone and water - there are plenty to choose from.

The benefits of using stone alternatives to lawn
The lawn often becomes an object from which they repel during the arrangement of the site, a place that determines its structure, nature and functional zoning. If you decide to save yourself from constant laborious care and worries and choose alternative design options, then the design process changes dramatically.
Such sites are placed in the plan or determined not in the first, but almost the last place, after flower beds, discounts and important functional objects, they are considered as a means of playing around the free space. Of course, you can apply the classical approach, but more often “gaps” are filled with stone filling or paving.
The breakdown of any design options for flat areas that are alternative to the lawn is fundamentally different from the lawn itself: it does not require any special efforts, no careful tillage, or such a long period of preparation. And while creating glades from groundcover, you have to take care of creating conditions that are comfortable for plants, then stone platforms can be broken easier and faster, they can be equipped both as a substitute for a lawn and as part of a garden re-arrangement. The only exception is the stone alternative to lawns, coupled with water bodies, which requires careful planning and engineering calculations.
It is very difficult to consider stone as one of the full-fledged options for replacing a green lawn for large gardens. Such an alternative was born as part of the search for new solutions for small areas, as a result of experiments with a non-standard approach to arrangement and the search for multifunctional solutions.
Stone lawn alternatives include:
- Crushed or gravel pads.
- Paving and its options that make the coating more diverse
- Pedestrian water garden
But no matter what the stone alternative to the lawn and how complicated the arrangement would be, the main thing is not to forget that, unlike the lawn, such a site must be skillfully landscaped, connecting it with the rest of the garden.
Flower beds and flower beds lead to the site itself, and most often literally “run” on it to create a feeling of naturalness and softness. Even in a regular garden, for harmony, they introduce either a series of flower islands, or potted, tubed and sculptural accents. It’s just that stone platforms look dull and lifeless, and sometimes they produce a strikingly dull and gloomy impression. And the only way to change this uniformity is to use the symbiosis of stone and plants in a new light.
Aristocratic softness underfoot
The easiest to create and maintain, but equal in functionality to the lawns are all areas covered with pebbles or gravel. Soft coverings for trails and as an alternative to paving on the terrace and in recreation areas have long won their fans in the West, but we have come into fashion relatively recently.
The main advantage of soft platforms is resistance to precipitation and the maintenance of wear resistance, regardless of the season. Unlike the lawn, you can walk on them even after rain, even in winter, even in early spring. They never turn into a swamp, do not get dirty, always look perfect, are easily corrected, withstand any movement. And in them it is so easy to introduce “islands” from plants, add unexpected accents, change the structure, shape and even style with simple manipulations.
Pebbles, gravel, gravel - the coating option is not limited to the classics and standard options. Construction supermarkets and stone-specializing enterprises today offer a choice of a wide variety of stone types, fractions and even coatings of various decorative illusions. Unpleasant for walking crushed stone has long been replaced by rounded, small polished crumbs and pebbles, which rustle underfoot and are not felt by the feet.
In the arrangement, all soft coatings are very simple. Flattened soil, a sand cushion, nonwoven materials laid under it to prevent weeds from growing, and a layer of stone crumbs of your choice are all concerns.
If you want to equip a playground for children to play, then instead of stone chips, choose sand. Coarse-grained colored sand or ordinary river sand will help create an excellent platform that is safe even for active games. It is enough to separate it from the rest of the garden or the rest of the site with a small hedge - and your own sandy lawn is ready.
Paved areas and mixed coatings
Classic paving is considered a boring coating. This is the most classic version of the arrangement, appropriate only for those who really like masonry and love paved terraces. As an alternative to the lawn, a paved area can be considered only when it is not about a uniform coating, but about various interesting patterns, a mixture of materials and techniques.
Paving with clinker, tile, concrete slabs, natural stone can be combined in one platform in any combination. To revive such a stone lawn, it is worth leaving gaps in the paving - fragments with soil in which you can plant perennial plants and create a feeling of symbiosis of stone and the rest of the garden.
But much more interesting are the sites that offer to mix materials that are completely different in nature - loose, cobbled, ground-filled plots. The combination of soft and hard coating always works flawlessly. Even a simple clinker combined with crushed stone, pebbles or gravel will look inimitable, and if you add to them also natural stone, wooden cuts, mosaics, the result will exceed all expectations.
And if you add fragments with ground covers to the pattern or fill them with gaps between the stones, you will achieve a sense of bright individuality and harmony. Thyme early, Roman chamomile, cinquefoil, common black head, hairy hawk, creeper tenacious, smooth hernia, fragrant violet, bell of Portenschlage, wild strawberry will cope with the task without much effort.
Such platforms are a kind of intermediate option between cobbled and soft, which allows playing with framing and mini flower gardens no worse than gravel lawns.
You can play endlessly with patterns of mixed platforms: squares made of stone or brick, gravel-filled spirals and circles, complex ornaments, stripes or a checkerboard - each has its own sweet heart option.
Whatever option you choose, it is better to forget about the concrete base for the site. Dry masonry on a sand or gravel pillow is the only option for paving when it comes to their alternatives to lawns. This is the only way you can, if you wish, not only plant the plants in the left passes, but also create new islands from the plants, play with filling the joints with ground covers, easily repair the coating, save yourself the need to carry out large construction work.
Water garden for walks
A water body, which is a symbiosis of a reservoir and a site, is often called a pedestrian water garden. This can be a pond or a pool in which a large area was taken to the gangplanks and bridges, or a series of separate platforms between which a narrow stream with paved stones was laid. Visually, it is perceived as cutting streams and ducts that divide the space and give the whole garden modernity, sophistication and elite.
You can arrange a pedestrian water garden as you wish. The main thing is that all water obstacles are conveniently overcome from a step distance, without additional effort, and the passage through the garden should be safe in any weather.
Arranging a pedestrian water garden requires skills and consultation with professionals. After all, it is necessary not only to calculate a sufficient foundation for such a special facility, but also to take care of the quality of insulation, the correct laying of communications and safety.
They always repel the design from water bodies - streams or a large pond that require laying a channel and water supply, and then equip the remaining base as reliable paved fragments or bridges with high stability and reliable supports.
