January garden calendar
January. It would seem that the garden is sleeping, it’s dull in the garden, but neither the gardener nor the gardener has to completely forget about the troubles. How carefully we spend our time this month on nature, how well we spend the time allocated for rest, how the plants will survive the winter, how the earth will prepare for spring, and what will grow on our beds in the new season. In a word, the saying "prepare a sled in the summer, and a cart in the winter", is about this period.
Snow to the rescue
If snow has covered the earth, it’s good. It protects the roots of plants from freezing. And therefore, in the garden and in the garden you need to manage a little: throw snow under the trees, on the bent shoots of raspberries and grapes, on the bushes of currants and gooseberries, on the beds. Strawberries are especially sensitive to severe frosts - it is necessary to take care of it in the first place. In areas with strong winds, it would be nice to put out snow removal shields.
But it is better to clear snow from tree branches, especially if it is one-, two- or three-year-old seedlings. This should be done at noon, when the snow melts a little, using a long pole, starting from the lower tier of the branches. In order not to damage the frozen bark, it is better to wrap the end of the device with a rag.
If bird feeders are hung in the garden, then it's time to clean them and refill the feed. What do our feathered neighbors eat? Sunflower seeds, millet, oats, wheat, dried berries of hawthorn and mountain ash. Tits and nuthatching will not give up lard or meat, which can be strung on twine, but they must be fresh.
If there is no feeder yet, but there is a desire to make it, then it is not necessary to craft a complex structure. It’s enough to adapt a plastic bottle, a candy box, a tetra pack from juice for this good deed. Hanging up a “bird's dining room” is necessary taking into account the fact that local cats may want to hunt for visitors. You also need to think about the goodies not to be blown away by the wind and not covered with snow.
But with mice and hares it is better not to stand on ceremony. If they come to visit you, then you won’t have any problems. Therefore, it is necessary to constantly inspect the territory of the garden for the signs of their stay, and if they are found, take urgent measures.
If everything was done in advance, then in January it remains only to adjust the harness on the tree stands and, to destroy the mouse passages, trample their roundabout circles.
But, the garden and beds are not the only place where rodents can appear. Basement, cellar, sheds - the territory where mice and rats like to visit. It is necessary to put traps in them, and a mesh on the ventilation passages.
In January, you can do tree planting, but the rule is only suitable for large-sized plants. Transplanted during this period, they are easier to take root. At the same time, the apple tree, pear and plum simply tolerate this procedure, but cherries older than 10 years require caution and special attention.
If you have polycarbonate greenhouses, and you did not begin to remove polycarbonate from them for the winter, be sure to put props inside and regularly sweep snow off the roof. In addition, it will not be superfluous to throw snow inside the structure, as well as clear it around the structure if the height of the snow cover begins to reach 50 cm.
Unheated glass greenhouses can also suffer under the weight of snow. But the snow will come off the heated ones. In January, if this was not done in December, tomato seedlings are planted, and early green ones are sown.
Kitchen garden on the window
If you are bored with greens, you want to grow fresh vitamins on the window - it's time to get the onions on the feather, plant the parsley, cloves of garlic in pots or boxes. If there is a desire to tinker with more serious plantings, then you can sow watercress, spinach, ruccola. But for the latter, it is necessary to organize more thorough care and high-quality illumination (the duration of daylight hours should be for them from 13 to 15 hours a day).
If you plan to grow root or petiole celery, seed potatoes, late varieties of peppers in the garden, then it's time to sow them for seedlings. And also, in January, the seeds of individual varieties of strawberries are sown.
Mandatory in the middle of winter and the audit of storage. A thorough inspection of vegetables and fruits, the elimination of rotten specimens, maintaining the correct temperature and humidity - a guarantee of the safety of the bulk of the workpieces.
In the period of relatively free winter days, you need to take care of garden equipment. And here it is not only about repair, but about the selection and purchase of new tools. As well as the purchase of mineral fertilizers, land for sowing seeds for seedlings, films, non-woven covering material and other things necessary for the garden.
In addition, it’s time to prepare a new set of clothes for working with chemicals, review buckets and baskets, and buy gloves. It should be remembered that gloves are different: for working with soil, for caring for trees and shrubs, for pruning prickly plants, for harvesting, for contact with liquids ...
And, of course, in the midst of winter, it is necessary, and frankly, I really want to think about spring plantings. In January, you can make a crop rotation, study new varieties, buy seed.
